Workflow transition rules; unable to set assignee as project lead role

I'm updating a workflow and trying to add a rule when transitioning. I need to be able to change the assignee to the project lead but --

• in the new editor, "assignee" isn't a field that's available to set 
• in the old editor, I can change the assignee to project lead but I need to change it to a different lead which isn't an option.

The Atlassian help specifically gives this as an example of something that you could do so I'm wondering if there's something wonky in our instance that it's not working. https://support.atlassian.com/jira-software-cloud/docs/what-are-the-different-workflow-rule-types/#Example--Assign-an-issue

Why would my instance not be allowing me to set the Assignee to Project Lead? And how can I make it so it will let me?

Have you used a update issue field post function, where Assignee can be changed to either:

• Unassigned
• Automatic
• Specific user - this could be your project lead (You can check this in your project details)

Using the old editor, I can assign to a specific user but I can't find a way to assign it to a different *role*  (rather than a specific user) other than the project lead.

You could also do this using an automation.

I am part of the support team of Decadis and I would like to propose a solution using our app Jira Workflow Toolbox for Jira Cloud.

With the Update fields post function, the Assignee field as well as other User Picker fields of the current issue could be updated with the project lead.

In order to do so, select the field Assignee to be updated and copy the field value from the field Project lead.

Please, note that it is necessary that the Assignee field is in the Edit screen.
