What is the difference between a locked field and a read-only field?

I'm new to Jira and I can't figure out the differences between the locked fields and read only fields.

Both seems to be hidden and Automation rules cannot edit a read only field. Are there any functional differences between both?

A locked field cannot have its configuration changed. A read-only field cannot have its contents changed
