What apps/gadgets are available with the Data Center version? Looking for cycle time reports

paul February 23, 2024

Hello,

I am using Jira Azure v9.4.14 and would like to know what apps and gadgets are available with this version.

Also, I am looking for an app/gadget that:

  1. Reports when the user story's status changes to "In Progress" and when the status changes to "Done".  The app would show dates of the changes or show the length of time the user story was in the "In Progress" status.  This is basically cycle time, but with dates shown.
  2. Shows a total of story points completed over some period of time for a team.

Are any of these available with the version that I am using?

 Thanks

 Paul

Hi @paul 👋

Another option to calculate cycle time is Time Between Statuses which generates reports of the transition time from one status to another. All you need is configure status group once and you will get you report always.

Hi @paul,

Take a look over these gadgets offered by our Great Gadgets app. This will the ideal solution for you.

For #1: Cycle Time Reports - this app offers 3 gadgets that allow you to track the cycle time in various ways:

  • Cycle Time Control Chart gadget - displays the issues by their cycle time, lead time or time between statuses in a plot chart, along with the overall average and lets you easily identify the ones who took longer than expected

image.png

  • Cycle Time Trend Chart gadget - displays the average cycle time, lead time or time between statuses in a trend chart along with the trend-line so see if you team improves over time

image.png

  • Lead Time Histogram gadget - displays the dispersion of the issues by their average cycle time, lead time or time between statuses. So, how many issues you have in every range, and how many took longer

image.png

These gadgets offer also a Data tab with a detailed report, which you can easily export in CSV.

The Data tab showing the issues along with their cycle time

For #2: total of story points completed over some period of time for a team - this can be easily achieved by using the Kanban Velocity / Throughput gadget offered by the same app

Hi @paul

as you've surely noticed by now, there is a number of apps from the Atlassian Marketplace that operate in this space. You can trial any app from the Marketplace for free for 1 month - so if a Marketplace app is an option for you, perhaps try a few and see which one works best for you.

On this note, my team and I work on another app that might be interesting to you: JXL for Jira.

JXL is a full-fledged spreadsheet/table view for your issues that allows viewing, inline-editing, sorting, and filtering by all your issue fields, much like you’d do in e.g. Excel or Google Sheets. It fully supports SLAs, and also comes with a number of so-called history columns that aren’t natively available, like e.g. time in [status], time between [status] and [status], date of change from [status] to [status], and many more.

With these, you should be able to build a report like e.g. this in just a couple of clicks:

time-in-status-v2.gif

As you can see above, you can easily sort and filter by all your columns, and also use them across JXL's advanced features, such as support for (configurable) issue hierarchies, issue grouping by any issue field(s), sum-ups, or conditional formatting.

Any questions just let me know,

Best,

Hannes

I'm not sure if you've seen the control chart? It shows both the cycle time and the dates when the issue transitioned. It isn't available on a dashboard, but you can view it in your specific board reports.

I have seen the control charts for the Kanban boards, but I am more interested in a report like this or an app/gadget.  I have 100+ users with 500 or so stories assigned to them over a 6 month period, so a tabular report would be helpful.

@paul

You can do something like that with the Time in Status app. There may be additional apps that can do it as well (there are several that appear to be similar on the marketplace) but I skimmed the descriptions quickly and tried this one first as it looked from their overview like it could do it.

Thanks,

Kian

Hi @paul

You can try Status Time Reports app developed by our team. It mainly provides reports and gadgets based on how much time passed in each status.

Here is the online demo link, you can see it in action and try without installing the app.

For further details, you can have a look at Cycle Time and Lead Time in Jira: Productivity Measurement with Two Critical Parameters article and Status Time Reports How to Videos.

  • This app has a dynamic status grouping feature so that you can generate various valuable reports as time in status, time in assignee, status entry dates and status counts, cycle time and lead time, resolution time, average/sum reports by any field(e.g. average in progress time by project, average cycle time by issue creation month).
  • You can search issues by Project, Issue Type, Status, Assignee, Issue Creation/Resolution Date(and any other Date field) and JQL Query.
  • Status durations are calculated according to the working calendar you define. Once you enter your working calendar into the app, it takes your working schedule into account too. That is, "In Progress" time of an issue opened on Friday at 5 PM and closed on Monday at 9 AM, will be a few hours rather than 3 days.
  • You can set different duration formats.
  • You can export reports in CSV file format and open them in MS Excel.
  • You can also add this app as a gadget to your Jira dashboards and reach “Status Time” from Issue Detail page.
  • You can enable/disable access to Status Time reports&gadgets and Issue Detail page per project, users, groups or project role.

If you are looking for a completely free solution, you can try the limited version Status Time Reports Free.

Hope it helps.

Update on May 9th, 2024: Time in Status by OBSS was recently rebranded as Timepiece. It is still the same capable app with the same dedicated team behind it. The answer below mentions the app as "Time in Status" but you can find the app in the marketplace as "Timepiece (formerly Time in Status)".

Hello @paul ,

Time in Status which is developed by my team at OBSS, is the tool I would highly recommend. It is available for both Jira Cloud and Data Center.

Time in Status mainly allows you to see how much time each issue spent on each status or each assignee

Time in Status offers several report types for your case:

The first one is Status Duration report  which shows how much time each issue spent on each status. You can combine the time for multiple statuses by your choice to get metrics like Issue Age, Cycle Time, Lead Time, Resolution Time etc. As an alternative approach, Time in Status also has Duration Between Statuses report type which shows the duration between two specific statuses. This report type also allows the user to exclude the times for "pause" statuses. (Please see the screenshots above)

Status Duration Report:

The second report type that I will recommend to you is First Transition to Status Date Report. This reports helps you get the dates issues first arrived at each status you can compare them with your own targets like lead times, responses times, etc.

First Transition to Status Date Report:

Report Types FT to Status Date.png

The app calculates its reports using already existing Jira issue histories so when you install the app, you don't need to add anything to your issue workflows and you can get reports on your past issues as well. Time in Status reports can be accessed through its own reporting page, dashboard gadgets, and issue view screen tabs. All these options can provide both calculated data tables and charts.  Also you can export the reports in to various formats easily.

Visit Time in Status to explore how our JIRA add-on can revolutionize your metrics measurement process. Enjoy a 30-day free trial to experience the full range of features

If you wish, you can also schedule a live demo. We will provide a comprehensive overview of the application and address any inquiries you may have.

Hope it helps,

Gizem
