I'm assuming that when you refer to a device, you're referring to an object type that has been created and populated. It's important to understand that there's no inherent intelligence built into any particular object type. They are each defined to represent whatever type of "object" you have.
To add a "version" to an object, you'd need to decide how you want to model it. There are a number of ways to model it. A version could be an attribute on an object, or it could be a separate object type, one possibly inherited from a parent object type.
