Hello Team,
I have seen several topics like this but was unable to find an answer. We have external users in our Jira that have access to only specific projects with limited rights. One of them cannot reset his password, he receives the following error message:
A request has been received to reset your password.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
This user account is managed in an external User Directory and Jira is not able to update your password.
Please contact your System Administrator if you have any further queries.
Here are the details of your account:

Username: vandenHeuvelJP
We use Jira on own server, not on cloud. Is there any chance me as administrator to reset the password for him?
Thanks,
Zhivko
Hi Nic,
Thanks for your reply.
Can you advise how I can go to the external directory in order to reset the password?
Best,
Zhivko
I don't know what your external directory is, so I'm afraid I can't begin to answer that!
You'll need to get in touch with the admins of the directory. If you are a Jira admin, you can go to Admin -> User Directories and get some technical info about the directory. That might enable you to work out who the owners/admins are.
You must be a registered user to add a comment. If you've already registered, sign in. Otherwise, register and sign in.
This is probably exactly what it says it is. Your Jira is using at least one external directory for its users, this particular user is in Jira because they are in the external directory, and Jira only has read-access to the external directory and hence cannot change passwords.
You'll need to go to the external user directory to get the password changed.
