Several Projects/One Board or Several Boards/One Project?

Juan Marin November 19, 2021

Hi there!

We have ONE IT department and several clients. We create issues per client, and then ALL issues are worked in the IT Department in a Kanban Process.

I was thinking of creating a single Project with one Board per client. I've now realized I can create several projects (one per client) and one single Board.

Any recommendation and pro's and con's of each approach (I am trying to minimize admin workload while providing a single-view of the client to each account executive)

Thanks!

Hola @Juan Marin

Gracias!!!

Hello @Juan Marin

Welcome to the community.

Are you wanting to work with Company Managed projects or Team Managed projects?

Are you working with Business (Work Management), Software, or Service Management projects?

Who are the customers that will consume the reports and what is the scope of the data they would want? Will the consumers always want to report only on one client at a time? Do you have other report consumers that would want to see an aggregate of data for multiple clients?

What type of view of the data do the consumers want? Could you use one project and one board and provide client-segregating reports based on a custom field that identifies the client? Do your Account Executives want to view the backlog and board, or do they want dashboard reports?

Do you have any apps added to your instance? Are you open to subscribing to apps to enhance reporting and dashboard functionality?

Hi Trudy!

All valid questions, indeed.

Got it, next time i'll be far more specific.

For now, let me answer the ones you ask:

  • Using a Company Managed Project
  • Jira Software
  • Account executives will work on one client at a time, while IT will work on tickets from all clients.
  • IT and Managers will request reports at an aggregated level, while acc executives will ask for them at client level.
  • Clients will not require any report
  • Acc. Executives will want to see the board for each one of their clients
  • No Apps in my instance, and happy to suscribe to them

Hope it helps!

Thanks in advance for your help!

Juan

Did you get a response to this? I am in the same place and just about to set up some projects/ boards so your question is most timely.

Hi John

Just found out that you can do both:

- One Board/Several projects can be set up while creating the board. You can have a board showing data from several projects

- On Project/Several Boards - This is super easy. Just create several boards and locate them in the project

Yet, I found particularly convenient the One Project/Several boards options. Doing this you minimize configuration and maintenance work as far as screens, fields, schemes, automaitions....

Quite pleased with One project/several boards option

Hope it helps

How can you find a list of the boards that are connected to that one project?
