Resolving Tickets in Jira Work Management without automat

Danielle Allen October 16, 2023

I am reviewing our automation usage limits, and almost all of our automations are to edit Done or Abandoned tickets as Resolved.

As per this post, this is apparently a bug, so it does not seem fair that we have to pay extra for these automations.

I am wondering if there is actually a way to have a ticket marked RESOLVED without an automation rule.

I am including a screenshot of our board workflow page for reference.Screenshot 2023-10-16 at 10.43.29 AM.png

The community post you refer to has as its solution creating a post-function that sets the Resolution field.

Have you created a post-function for those transitions that move to Done or Abandoned?

I don't see the option to create a Post Function in my Workflows?Screen Shot 2023-10-16 at 12.29.09 PM.png

Hello @Danielle Allen

This was true for Team Managed Jira Work Management projects, but is no longer true.

The issue was resolved in May 2023.

https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JWMCLOUD-180

If your issues in such a project are transitioning to a status in the green/Done status category, then the Resolution field and the Resolved date/time field should now be getting set automatically. You should not need to set them through Automation Rules.

I have tested this with my own TM JWM projects and it appears to be working.

Are you not having the same experience?

@Hi @Danielle Allen, @Trudy Claspill  is right. Sorry, but when a I was reading your question I thought you wanted to customize the standard Done resolution to something else, which is still not available and still an open in issue JSWCLOUD-17499

Hi @Danielle Allen,

You can set the resolution either by Post functions or by Transition screen.

Post functions is used if you want to force a specific resolution. Transition screen is used if the user can select the resolution from a dropdown. Try this:

For Post function

  1. Start by Edit the Worflow
  2. Select the transition that goes into Done and/or Abandoned.
  3. Under Options select Post functions.
  4. Click Add post function (see right side)
  5. Select Update issue field, and press add
  6. In the Issue Field dropdown select Resolution
  7. In the Field Value dropdown select the resolution you want to set
  8. Press Add
  9. Apply the changes in the Worflow by selecting Publish draft (top of the screen)

For Transition screen

  1. Start by edit the Workflow
  2. Select the transition that goes into Done and/or Abandoned.
  3. Press the Edit button (above the Options list)
  4. In the Screen dropdown select Resolve issue screen
  5. Press Save
  6. Apply the changes in the Worflow by selecting Publish draft (top of the screen)

Hello,

Thanks for your response! What I would like to have happen is what you describe under POST FUNCTION, however I don't seem to have the options you list.

I get as far as this step in your instructions -

For Post function

  1. Start by Edit the Workflow
  2. Select the transition that goes into Done and/or Abandoned.
  3. Under Options select Post functions.

I don't see OPTIONS or POST FUNCTIONS.

All I see is Delete transition or Properties.

Hi @Danielle Allen, my mistake. I was answering based on company-managed project and not team-managed project, even your first image of the worflow clearly shows you are in a team-manged project. Sorry for this.

I will look into a better answer for you.

Alas, my answer is also based on company-managed projects.  I don't think you can change the resolution automatically without doing an automation on a team-managed project.
