Vanessa Sibley September 26, 2023

Is there support to assist with moving projects from one Jira instance to another?

I read the instructions outlined in the links below, but the effort is too advance for my skillset.

Hello @Vanessa Sibley

Is the source system a Jira Server, Jira Data Center, or Jira Cloud instance?

Is the destination system a Jira Server, Jira Data Center, or Jira Cloud instance?

Have you considered engaging an Atlassian Solutions Partner? Many partners, including the one that I work for - Praecipio, will assist you with migrating your content from one instance to another. You can use the Atlassian Partner directory to find a partner that meets your needs.

Yes, it is..

Move FROM: https://bmda.atlassian.net  TO, https://baptisthealth.atlassian.net.  I will reach out to those you have referenced for assistance.  Thanks for the response!

Based on those URL that would be a Cloud to Cloud migration.

How large of an effort is this? Are you trying to move just a few projects with a small number of issues, or many project with many issues?

Is this a merging of two previously independent sites form independent organizations?

Are either of the sites using an Identity Provider to create the user accounts that are granted access?

Do the sites use the same third party apps?

Are any of the projects that you want to move a Team Managed project?

There are a lot of factors to consider in a migration. You can get some assistance directly from Atlassian by opening support tickets, and here through the Atlassian community. Both of those options and the Atlassian Solution Partner option are mentioned int he document you referenced in your post. If you want to have somebody handle the migration for your and walk you through it step by step, my recommendation is that you engage a Partner.

  1. Its only a single project that has 978 issue types (Epics, Stories and Subtasks)
  2. It's a single department from our organization that established a separate Jira instance that we want to bring into our corporate organization Jira instance.
  3. I am unsure if we use Identity Provider to create the user accounts that are granted access. I am a site administrator for both, and users are able to submit their email address and I can grant Jira access at that time, if that answers your question.
  4. Yes, the sites both use the same third-party apps.
  5. The Project Type is "Company-Managed software".

Yes, I am sure there are many factors to be considered. And perhaps it would be best if we reach out to an Atlassian partner for further assistance.

I greatly appreciate your feedback and addressing my questions!

Hi @Vanessa Sibley ,

As an option you can try to backup your Jira data and recover it to another instance.

I work at GitProtect.io, a backup & Disaster Recovery solution for Jira Software, Jira Work Management, and Jira Service Menagement. Using backup and recovery it's possible to migrate data between projects and different Jira accounts, for example between Jira Software and another Jira Software account.

You ca take a look at the software at Atlassian Marketplace: https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1228719/gitprotect-io-backups-for-jira-cloud?hosting=cloud&tab=overview
