I'm able to link Epic to User Story but I'm unable to add Task to the User Story.
This means I am not able to create the desired heirarchy
-- Epic
-- User Story
-- -- Task
-- -- -- Sub Task
Appreciate your help
Hi @Biju Menon
If you are on a free cloud plan, you cannot adjust the hierarchy as you desire.
The premium/enterprise plan gives you advanced roadmap with the options to customise the issue hierarchy
+ even with issue hierarchy customization, there can be only 2 levels below epic (all other standard issue types , all subtask issue types) which cannot be customised

Is there any particular reason why Jira believes three step hierarchy is sensible for better project management?

Hi @Biju Menon
as @Fazila Ashraf mentioned, you can have more than 3 levels of hierarchy (if you are on Jira Premium) - it's just that any additional levels of hierarchy need to be above epic. As you can rename your hierarchy levels, you can also model the system that you are looking for; you just have to keep in mind that there are certain semantics associated with the 3 basic/bottom levels of hierarchy that you can't change.
It's also worth mentioning that you can model any hierarchy that you want using issue links. The downside is that this system is sometimes too flexible, and that Jira doesn't do a great job in displaying such issue hierarchies. This being said, if you are open to solutions from the Atlassian Marketplace, there are various options available that can help with this.

Hello @Biju Menon
This means I am not able to create the desired hierarchy
Since, by default, there is no such issue type as a 'Task' in Jira Cloud, that's hardly surprising.
Google 'Jira Cloud default issue hierarchy' for more information.

I am able to create the story as I created one with all the required info except adding the EPIC link for my group.
What authority or profile type is required for story and EPIC creation? My team is baffled. I opened a ticket to Jira group at my company
