Jira Service Management - Can't Edit Workflows

Cole Thatcher November 7, 2023

Hello,

I'm using JSM and supporting an IT team but seem to be unable to edit workflows anymore. When I had previously set this up, there seemed to be a "hidden" settings page under Request Types > Issue Settings.

When I got to Project Settings > Workflow, I can see the workflow but don't see any edit options (images below). I remember being confused on where to find these settings a few months ago when I set it up.

I am a org and site admin so I don't think its a permissions issue.

Note: I know its a pretty basic workflow, we are trying to keep it simple.

Thanks in advance for the help!Screenshot 2023-11-07 at 10.48.18 AM.png

Hi @Cole Thatcher,

Welcome to Atlassian Community!

If you have Jira admin permissions you should see a pencil under Actions when you go to Project settings > Workflows that would allow you to edit the workflow. Another way to get to the workflow editor is to go to Settings > Issues > Workflows and locate the workflow from there.

I would check and make sure that you are in the Jira admin group, and also make sure that you have been assigned a JSM/Jira license.

Hey, thanks for getting back to me so quickly!

On our project we unfortunately haven't ever been able to go to Project Settings > Workflow and edit the workflow from there. I can see that page, but there isn't a pencil icon. We always had to go Settings > Issues > Workflows to edit. However, that settings page seems to have moved or been removed? I'll include some images.

Okay, since you do not see Settings > Issues that means that you do not have Jira admin permissions, and that would explain why you also do not see the pencil when going to Project settings > Workflows. Without Jira admin permission you will not be able to edit workflows.

It looks like I was an org and site admin but at some point I lost jira admin. I was able to fix that and it works now. Thanks!

Hello @Cole Thatcher

Welcome to the community!

Did you try to edit workflows by going to Issues -> Workflows -> Pick a workflow -> 3 dots -> Edit.

Let me know.

Best regards,

Hey Marko, I don't have an issues settings that I can access. I used to have that page, but can't see it anymore. Please see my reply below for images. Thanks for getting back to me so quickly!

If you used to have it but don't anymore, you're not org and site admin anymore.

Org, site and jira admins have access to that page.

I was an org and site admin but not a jira admin (must have lost that at some point when we did some role cleanups). I made myself a jira admin and that fixed it. Thanks!
