Is there an equivalent to Component on Jira Cloud?

Philip Wilson September 27, 2023

I'm currently trying to import tests into Zephyr Scale.

The tests have been labeled with an area of functionality, Zephyr maps these to "Component"

However, I can not find component in my project (I have site and project admin role), following the online documentation.

Further searches have suggested that Component is only available on self-hosted instances of Jira.

Is there a suitable alternative I should use, or should I just create my own custom field?

Hello @Philip Wilson

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

There is a built in "Component" system field which is included in Jira Cloud. However the Component functionality is available only for Company Managed projects. In Jira Cloud there is another type of project called a Team Managed project.

You can determine which type of project you have by looking at the Type column in the "View all projects" page under the Projects menu.

HI Trudy,

Many thanks for the quick reply.

It seems you are correct, my project is a Team-managed software type.

in that case is there a different field I should use instead for a team-managed project?

Team Managed projects don't have the Component functionality at this time.

Team Managed projects have two custom field types that support multiple value selection (if that is what you need) - Labels and Checkbox.

I've never tried to import Zephyr data before, so I can't advise on which option would be the best, nor exactly how to execute the import.

You may want to confirm that the Zephyr functionality will actually work with a Team Managed project. Some app vendors have not yet enhanced their apps to work with that project type.

Understood, this is really helpful thank you.

I'm now reviewing if I can convert the project type and what the implications would be.

many thanks again for your help :-)

Hi Philip,

Zephyr Scale allows you to choose field mapping during the import process - you can see in the screen paste below that it's the 3rd screen (top of the frame).  Is it possible you have skipped over that screen?

For more help on using Scale there is a dedicated user community forum here - I'm one of the community leaders

I hope this works for you!

Best, Andy
