Is it possible to edit the severity field options?

Folake Olatoye-Ojo September 25, 2023

I am trying to edit the severity field for my team-managed project. What It currently displays as options is Sev-0, Sev-1, Sev-2 and Sev-3. My team uses sev 1-4 instead and would like to edit/update the options accordingly. Is there a way to edit this?

@Folake Olatoye-Ojo

Is the Severity field one that was pulled in from globally available fields? Or is it one that you created specifically for your team managed project?

Thanks,

Kian

@Kian Stack Mumo Systems I believe it's from the globally available fields . I initially had severity custom fields created across multiple projects but moving issues always meant the field value was being dropped. Now that I'm aware that I can use the same globally available field and not lose values, I'm trying to set that up and I'm not able to edit the default value

You need to edit the default value through the global administration area.

Navigate to Administration -> Issues -> Custom Fields and then modify the details of the Severity field.

When using a Globally available field in a Team Managed project you cannot customize the options available in that field.

Globally available fields do have a concept called Context which would allow you to create custom lists per Company Managed project, but that can't be used to create a custom context for a Team Managed project. Team Managed projects can use only the Global Context defined for a Globally available field.

@Trudy Claspill Do you mean this is not possible at all or it's possible only using 'context'? I'm not very familiar with that if it's the later. Is there some existing documentation I can look into for this? Thank you very much for helping answer my question.

I don't know if this helps @Kian Stack Mumo Systems @Trudy Claspill But this is what my admin seesEdit Custom Field - Details - Jira 2023-09-22 at 11.25.39 AM (1).jpg

For the Team Managed project it is not possible at all to leverage the Context option that is available for global fields. Team Managed projects will use the "default" context for the field (the context that is used by every project for which a custom context has not been defined).

So, you cannot change the Severity values for just the one Team Managed project when using a global field.

If you want to learn more about the Context option for global fields and leveraging those for Company Managed projects, here is the documentation:
