I would like to know the retention period for Jira Service Desk backup files and if it can be customized. My storage is currently full due to the backup files in the directory /var/atlassian/application-data/jira/export.

Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

It depends on what your system admins have configured.  You'll need to ask them to look at what they are doing for housekeeping, and ask them to set up something to kill off unwanted files (I usually use logrotate to hoover out backup files if you're using them, but I mostly turn off the automatic backups and get the database and attachments directory backed up properly, for medium to large installs)
