How to customize the backlog board?

Jui Shah September 27, 2023

As a Scrum master, I want to present my project backlog to my stakeholders over a meeting, currently, I see the stories, tasks, and bugs that are not connected to any sprint, is displayed in the Backlog board.

Now, I want to customize my backlog board in such a way I only have the list of Epics created in my project and story/ task/ bug that is not linked with any Epic.

So is that backlog view creation possible?

You can create a quick filter for your board and activate it so that only Epics and the issues not linked to Epics are displayed. Then activate that quick filter when you want that view.

issuetype = Epic OR "Epic Link" is EMPTY

Hi @Trudy Claspill ,

Thanks for looking into it.

I tried with that filter before sharing this question here. But I was unable to do so. So is there anything that I can do further?

Hello @Jui Shah

What do you mean by you were "unable to do so"? Were you not able to create a Quick Filter? Were you able to create it, but when you used it you didn't get the results you expected?

Please provide more information about how using the quick filters did not meet your needs.

Hey Trudy,

I am able to create a quick filter in the backlog view but unfortunately, when I used that filter I didn't get the result that I am looking for. So I am unsure how I can achieve the required result.

What exactly are the results you desire, and what exactly were the results you got?

Was something missing that you expected to see?

Was something present that you didn't want to see?

Provide details. Show us the actual Quick Filter JQL that you used. Show us the details of an issue you expected to see that was not present (or that was present but you did not want to see).

Hi Trudy,

Sorry for the delayed reply.

Suppose I have created a filter that would be supposed to list only Epics available in that project backlog.

Project name: Automation

Epic names:

- Automate Project A Rest APIs

  • Stories under that Epics:
    • Automate API 1
    • Automate API 2

- Automate Project B Rest APIs

  • Stories under that Epics:
    • Automate API 1
    • Automate API 2

- Automate Project C Rest APIs

  • Stories under that Epics:
    • Automate API 1
    • Automate API 2

When the filter applies:

Only 3 Epics should be displayed as a result in the backlog view. I.e.

  • Automate Project A Rest APIs
  • Automate Project B Rest APIs
  • Automate Project C Rest APIs

Which is currently not happening. So what should I do?

Please show us the filter used by this board.

Also show us the exact quick filter you created.

You said you expected only three Epics to display in the backlog, but that was not what was happening. If that is not what is happening, then please tell us what is displaying in the backlog when you apply the filter.

Hey Trudy,

I simply created a quick filter to see Epics in the backlog, but I am unable to view so. Please refer attached video for the same.

Hello @Jui Shah

The board shown in your image is a Scrum board, based on the presence of Sprints in the backlog.

Note that in a Scrum board Epic issues are not displayed in the list of issues for the Backlog or the sprints. Epics only display in the Epics panel. You can display the Epics panel by pulling down the Epics filter (which is three to the left of the Quick Filters pull down).

Epics are not included in the list because, generally, Epics should not be assigned to sprints. Epics are generally scoped such that they can't be completed in a sprint, so there is no purpose served by assigning them to a sprint.
