How do I keep 'Done' stories visible in Backlog view ?

Satish Cherian February 14, 2022

When a story is marked 'Done', it disappears from the Backlog view.  We just noticed this behavior during sprint 3, which started 2/14.   We can see 'Done' stories in earlier sprints.  Could someone help set things up so we can continue to see 'Done' stories in the Backlog view of a sprint ?

Thank you.

To fix this behavior, you have to click the 'Start Sprint' button.  Once that's done, 'Done' issues stay visible in the sprint.   Not sure why it works this way, but at least I know how it works now.   Thank you to everyone on this thread for their comments and suggestions.

Er, yes, that makes the sprint active, so it'll show things done in this sprint.

It's not the answer to your question though.

Hey,

So i have the same or similar issue and can explain it a bit better. His question was never answered...

1) Currently the format of the project that my board is in SHOWS any and all stories, regardless of status in the backlog. This means that even when stories are DONE AND have a Resolution strikethrough... they still show up in the backlog when sprint is over. (assuming you closed sprint and send issues to backlog) NOT IDEAL!

2) To counter this in my board I have created a filter that searches for: resolution is not EMPTY. This fixes the issue with completed stories being visible. However.... it also makes them disappear instantly when they have a resolution. Until my sprint is finished, i still want to be able to see the DONE stories in the Active Sprint view as well as in the specific sprint in the Backlog View.

I have worked for a few companies and it was always the case that a DONE story would stay visible until the sprint was closed, and then disappear from the board. How can i recreated this!?

p.s.

I personally do not have access to the Project JQL filter.

Here my columns

Here is my board JQL. The component is just the tag for each team / board.

Assuming by "sprint view" you mean the active board, then I think I know what you have done.

Your "done" status is not mapped on to a column on your board.  So issues in it are not shown on the board (and also, are not "done", by definition as they're not in the last column on the board)

Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

A backlog is a list of issues that need some attention.  If an issue is "done", it needs no further attention.

So, your "done" issues vanish from the backlog because they are not supposed to be there anymore.

(You get to see "done" issues in completed sprints to tell you everything that happened in the sprint)

Hi Nic, sorry I wasn't clear in my question, I'm new to JIRA.   A clearer way to word my question would've been to ask - how to keep 'Done' stories when looking at a particular Sprint (in the Backlog view).  I don't see a way to attach a picture, that would've made things clearer about what I was asking.

Your comment about "...You get to see "done" issues in completed sprints ..." - that's exactly where I'm saying Done issues disappear from, in sprints.

I don't understand the question.

Your backlog is a list of issues that need attention.  At the top of your backlog, there are open sprints, whether planned or in progress.

Issues that are done do not appear on the backlog, they're not supposed to, the whole point of a backlog is that it looks at issues that are not done.

When you look at completed sprints, you are not using the backlog view.

@Satish Cherian There can be different ways in which you can see that information but question is that why do you want to see it in backlog? By definition, Backlog is for any work "to be done" in the product.

They dont just disappear as soon as stories are marked done. They (Done stories) stay in the active sprint view as long as sprint is not complete.

Also, you get the details of all stories completed in a sprint, thru Sprint Report.

"...They (Done stories) stay in the active sprint view as long as sprint is not complete...." - unfortunately, that's not the behavior we're seeing, Amit.   When a story is marked as Done, we do see it disappear from the sprint view.  And it reappears when we change it back to 'In Progress'.   The funny thing is that this only started happening for the current sprint.  When I look at past sprints, I do still see 'Done' stories.

@Satish Cherian , hello!

Welcome to the atlassian community!

For what purpose do you need to see completed stories in the backlog?

Kind Regards

Satish Cherian February 16, 2022

Hi Roberto, I apologize, I didn't do a great job of asking my question clearly.  Please see my clarifications to Nic and Amit above.

Hi Satish,

Welcome to the community!

So this is a tricky subject. The way boards work is anything in the done column will disappear, thats just how columns work. Thus you would need to change the board layout, however, this can break sprint reporting.

A better way to handle this would be to make a roadmap that gives you a gannt view of the issues. You can configure roadmaps to show closed issues.

Hope this helps!

Best,

Clark
