How can I adapt Jira Burdown chart to my real working days ?

Alexis Lamrani October 16, 2023

Hello community,

I would like to know if it is possible to adapt Burdown chart to working days (or half day).

At the moment, it seems that the burndown chart displays only the sum of the story points, decreasing day by day with the following computation : Total story points / Working days.

However, we have some specifities that I would like to see appear in my burndown chart : vacations, training hours,... that won't be included in my story points.

For instance :

If I have a one-week sprint with 3 devs and 15 story points total, and I have a one-day training session, I will reduce my total point to 12.
However, I won't see that we need to do 3 stories-points per day with a not working day. I will see 2,4 stories points per day with all the week days as working days.

I hope I was clear, but as you can see, english is not my native language, and the topic is not that simple to explain.

Thanks a lot

Hi @Alexis Lamrani

This is not how the concept of jira and SCrum works.

A sprint has a certain capacity of work, set by the scrum team.

Issues in a sprint are estimated to a number of story points, this should not be over the team limit set.

This also means that the sprint capacity should be defined per person, but as the team.

Don't think of we have 5 days and every day 3 points should be burned.

That's also why the average is taken as you work as a team, not as individuals.

Hey @Marc - Devoteam

Thanks for your answer, but it doesn't answer my issue.

Indeed, if I have a full training day for the team, I won't see the reflection of reality.

=> The team should do 2.4 story points but nobody is available this day. It shows that nothing moved but it's normal...

"Don't think of we have 5 days and every day 3 points should be burned."

I could agree on the theory, but this is exactly where a burndown chart will help you. It's only a help to give visibility on the team progression :)
