Can Jira Sprint Burndown track hours as estimation points instead of story points?

Martin Blomgren-Sköld November 14, 2023

In a project of mine we use hours as "story points". With these settings, my sprint burndown will not show our progress. Is there a way to make the sprint burndown work or do I need to switch to story points?

Hello @Martin Blomgren-Sköld

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

Are you working with a Scrum board in a Team Managed project or a Company Managed project?

What field have you selected in your board configuration for your Estimation statistic?

Which field have you selected to display in the burndown chart when you're viewing it?

In Company Managed projects it is possible to use time fields (Original Estimate, Remaining Estimate) as the Estimation statistic, and show burn down in the chart based on the reduction of Remaining Estimate as time is logged against issues.

In a Team Managed project it appears that burn down happens only when the issue is moved to the column farthest to the right on your board, regardless of whether you are using time for your estimation or Story points.

Hi!

I'm working in Team managed project and everything is Enabled under Insights (if that is what you mean?). I can get a burndown if I go into reports and click Burndown report, this I fixed pretty early, however, when I want the Insight section to update and show a burndown it says it does not support my current estimation values, i.e., hours (minutes, days, weeks etc). A report is something I save after a sprint, and I would rather use the insight for a quick peak at my team's progression.

In my question I was not clear on the fact that it is the Insight part that is not working. Maybe the answer is as simple as "it's not supported yet".

Hi @Martin Blomgren-Sköld,

Instead of struggling with Jira's limited charts and reports, try our Great Gadgets app.

It provides everything you need to track your projects by time estimates and time spent in an easy way, with the ability to include sub-tasks in the calculation: sprint burndown chart, release burndown chart with forecast, team velocity chart, etc. It supports both company-managed and team-managed projects.

See also this article from our blog on how to use these gadgets: Tracking an agile project that uses time estimates with Great Gadgets for Jira

This app offers many other gadgets to use with Scrum, Kanban, Service Desk, etc. It can be a great asset for you and your team.

Hope this helps.

Danut.

@Martin Blomgren-Sköld -

Welcome to the community.  If you change the Estimation on your SCRUM board to "Remaining Estimate and Time Spent", then the reports will reflect the change from Story Points to Time Estimates.

Here is a reference link for you - https://support.atlassian.com/jira-software-cloud/docs/configure-estimation-and-tracking/

Hope this helps.

Thanks for reaching out!

Our problem might be that we are using Team managed project. I'll keep the link for later if we decide to change our settings.
