Adding contributors and creators to a Jira Product Discovery project

Hi everyone,

Previously we provided more details about how Jira Product Discovery pricing was going to work, and in particular the new user roles: creator, contributor and stakeholders.

Creators need a Jira Product Discovery license. Contributors do not need any Jira license. This post explains how to add creators and contributors to a project. You can also just watch this video with instructions: video - configure Creators and Contributors.

Adding creators and contributors to the site (by site administrators)

Site administrators decide which users are creators or contributors, in admin.atlassian.com in the Directory tab, which you can access through here:

Adding creators

To be a creator a user need product access to Jira Product Discovery on the site (aka a license).

To give access: select the user > Add products > Jira Product Discovery > User:

Users with product access are creators on the site. They can be added to Product Discovery projects as creators or contributors.

Adding contributors

To be a contributor, a user needs one of two things:

  • product access (a license) to any Jira product: Jira Product Discovery, Jira Software, Jira Service Management, Jira Work Management
  • OR
  • to be added to the site and a specific user group (no license needed, it’s free).

1. Turn on the contributors user group (if you were part of JPD beta)

First you’ll need to turn this feature on in the Jira product settings. You only need to do this once:

Turning this feature on will create the Jira Product Discovery contributor user group:

2. Then you can add contributors

This user is has access to a Jira product, so is automatically a contributor:

This user does not have access to a Jira product (either no product access at all, or access to a non-Jira product like Confluence), so needs to be added to the contributors group:

Adding creators and contributors to projects (by project administrators)

From that point on users with administrator access to a Product Discovery project can add users as creators or contributors to the project, in the project settings > access screen:

An additional aspect to understand in this screen is Product role vs Project role:

  • Product role: basically "is the user a Creator or a Contributor in this site?" as per everything we've discussed earlier in this post
  • Project role: project roles define a list of permissions in a project. When user are given a project role in a project, it limits the list of features they can access in this project. Users can have different project roles in different projects. Here's a video that explains this in more details.

ℹ️ If you'd like contributors to be able to create ideas, head off to this post.

Hi @Tanguy Crusson

I don't like the idea of sharing URLs publicly to get early access. :( Do you have an alternative way, like submitting it through a Google Form? I believe some other Atlassian products are using Google Forms to request early access.

Sorry if I missed that Google Form. :D
