Tourette Syndrome (TS) Awareness Month (May 15 to June 15) is an annual global initiative to raise awareness for a poorly understood, heavily stigmatized neurological disorder.
This neuro-developmental condition causes people with TS to make involuntary sounds and movements called tics, and it affects as many as 1 in 100 Canadians. The average onset of symptoms is around the ages of 4–7 years. TS affects three to four times as many boys as girls, and although the tic symptoms tend to decrease with age, the associated disorders (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, neurobehavioral disorders) can persist throughout adulthood.
