Why is Page Archiving disabled by default?

New to confluence, setting up spaces preparing for a migration. I'm looking at the default permissions.

Is there a reason Archive Page is disabled by default and yet Delete is enabled? It would seem to me that the opposite would be wise, but perhaps there's a best-practice reason it's set up like that?

Some archiving features are premium only, I wonder if this is a factor in determining the defaults @Alex Sramek:

Hi @Alex Sramek ,

please verify that users have the right permissions to archive pages.

Who can archive a page

There are two archiving permissions:

  • permission to archive any page in a space

  • permission to archive only your own pages

Give user permission to archive any page in a space

The Archive space permission grants the ability to archive any page in the space. This also covers restoring pages back to the page tree. Any page you can archive, you can restore too.

Even with the space-level archive permission, you can’t archive a page you don’t have permission to view.

Only space admins can assign archiving permissions.

How to access a space's general settings for Confluence.

To assign the space-level archive permission:

  1. Go to the space in Confluence Cloud.

  2. Select Space Settingsfrom the sidebar.

  3. Select General from the Space permissions card.

  4. Under the Groups or Individual Users header, select Edit Permissions.

  5. Click into the search field at the bottom of either section and search for the user or group.

  6. Select Add.

  7. Make sure to check the box for Archive under the Pages column.

  8. Select Save all at the bottom of the page.

All users inherently have the permission to archive any page they themselves created. As long as they have the permission to view pages in the space, they can archive their own pages.

Thanks, Fabio.

What I was asking about is:

In the default Space permissions, Delete is enabled, and Archive is disabled. What is the reason for that?

Yeah, this is weird. The opposite would probably make more sense (Archive enabled and Delete disabled).
