I've just been logged out of Confluence :| , and when I logged back in it asked me about my job and department in order to 'personalise' my experience.
Something I have never asked for.
So what does this actually do?

I believe that information is all added to your profile. I think they then use it to recommend certain templates, etc. when you are creating pages.

I have never used a template, nor do I intend to.
@Ray Dysart you can always go to your profile to change or remove information.
