Faster and Better Page Reloads in Confluence

The Confluence Cloud Performance team is focused on improving overall performance and making things load faster. We recently launched an upgrade that significantly reduces the amount of time for pages to reload when you are collaborating/editing in real-time.

What is the upgrade?

This particular update is focused on the "Reload" notification that appears in the bottom left when someone else publishes changes to the page (while you’re also editing that page).

Screen Shot 2020-12-17 at 2.41.19 PM.png

In the old version of the feature, clicking the "Reload" link would cause the browser tab to fully refresh. In other words, a slow reload. In more technical details for those interested… this would result in the javascript loading and processing, and the page completely repainting.

In the new version of the feature, clicking the "Reload" button will be much faster.
For those techies, only the page contents area refresh. Meaning, the newly published text/macros/images and comments simply appear. We reduced the amount of data that need to be downloaded for a refresh and no additional javascript needs to be processed.

Plus, now after a reload, your position on the page will be maintained! Meaning a reload won’t jump you to the top of the page, disrupting your flow.

What does it mean for me?

When viewing a page that people are actively collaborating on (commenting, publishing edits), you will have a much better experience, both faster and less disruptive. There’s a rollout plan, but by the time you read this it should have reached most customer instances.

There is one minor caveat we’re working on improving. Published changes and comments you make won’t trigger this notification for yourself on other tabs you have open to the same page - only other users receive the notification. You’ll have to manually refresh those other tabs to get the new content.

What’s next?

We’re actively working on other ways to improve the real-time collaboration experience in Confluence. We’re always looking for user feedback, the more specific the better, so please let us know!

Wouldn't it be nice to have this Jira-Confluence integration?

...ossibility became true in a not too far future, project/space access would be left in the hands of all team members. Don't get me wrong: I'd love it! However, it would also be nice to have a way in which j...
