[Video] Upcoming changes to dashboard controls

We're excited to introduce new changes coming later this week to variable controls that will make it easier to create and use them in your dashboards. With these changes you'll be able to:

  • Automatically connect controls to all charts on the dashboard (under certain conditions mentioned later in this post)

  • Create each control type using the same unified experience within the dashboard itself

Overview of the changes

Let’s take a look at the “Dropdown” control to see an example of the upcoming changes.

Select Add control from the dashboard sidebar then select Dropdown.

You'll now see a pop-up where you can configure the settings for the “Dropdown” control.

Some settings will look familiar, so we’ll highlight the new ones:

  • Data source and column: “Dropdown” controls use the values from the selected data source to populate its list of options.

  • Connect this control to new and existing charts: If selected and the required criteria are met for the chart, we’ll automatically add a query filter to the chart to connect it to the control.

    • The query for the chart must use the same data source as the control and must be built using the visual mode.

    • The automatically applied query filter will filter the column you selected at the beginning of the form.

  • Filter operator: Uses the selected operator in the automatically applied query filter.

  • Switch to control editor: This takes you to the control editor where you can build your own Visual SQL queries to create a more custom and complex control (only available for “Dropdown” and “Date slider” controls).

    • Note: Controls created using the control editor do not have the option to automatically connect to all charts on the dashboard. You’ll need to edit the chart and manually connect it.
