[Video] A simpler way to explore your data with Visual SQL

We are excited to announce that we've released a major update to our Visual SQL experience for the Atlassian Data Lake. This update is based on feedback we’ve received during our EAP and beta, and we hope it makes querying data in the Data Lake even easier than before.

If you prefer a video update, Kevin–one of the product managers for Atlassian Analytics–recorded a video to showcase the changes we’ve made and how you can get them.

We’ve made a number of updates to the schema browser for visual mode queries:

  • Surfaced the tables and columns that we believe will be commonly used for creating most charts

  • Hid* the less commonly used tables and columns

  • Grouped all tables and columns by each product so it’s easier to find the data you’re looking for

  • Updated the display names for tables and columns so they’re easier to read and reflect proper casing for initialisms

*You can view all tables and columns in your Data Lake schema at any time by selecting the Show full schema toggle at the bottom of the schema browser for visual mode queries.

Will my charts break?

We don’t expect this to cause any breaking changes to existing charts and dashboards. But if you encounter any problems, create a support ticket for Atlassian Analytics, and our team will be happy to help you.

How do I get the new changes?

The schema improvements will automatically be available for any new Data Lake connections going forward.

For existing Data Lake connections, you’ll need to do the following:

  1. Select Data from the global navigation menu.

  2. From the list of data sources, select the Data Lake connection that you’d like to update.

  3. Go to the Schema tab of its settings.

  4. Select Sync schema.

What's next

When we created Visual SQL, our goal was to make querying data both easy and powerful. We wanted the experience to be powerful enough for analysts to do complex analysis, yet simple enough that you did not need to know SQL to create your charts and dashboards. This update continues on this journey, and we hope to have even more coming in future updates!
