New to groovy scripting

Hello, I am a Jira Admin, and I am new to groovy script in Jira. I would like to know more about it.

We could write quite a long essay about writing Groovy scripts for Jira, but it would probably not help you a lot.  

Could you narrow it down a bit?  What app are you using to put the scripts into, and, more importantly, what sort of things do you want to use your scripts for?

I am trying to use it as a validator. If a value already exists for a given customfield, there should be a warning statement that it already exists and give the value of the field.
