Deprecating the Bitbucket app for Microsoft Teams

After careful evaluation, we have decided to deprecate the Bitbucket App for Microsoft Teams due to low usage and adoption.

At Atlassian, our mission is to enhance team collaboration, streamline focus, and amplify the impact for all team members. When we introduced the Bitbucket App for Microsoft Teams, our aim was to help everyone boost their productivity by integrating Bitbucket and Microsoft Teams seamlessly.

However, after engaging with several users, it became evident that the app does not deliver the level of efficiency and user experience we initially envisioned.

As a result, we have decided to discontinue this app until we develop a superior solution. You can continue using it for now, but please note that it will cease functioning on September 20, 2023.

Sunset timeline:
7/20/23: Users will see an in-app message stating this app will be deprecated in 60 days

8/20/23: App will be disabled for any new users. Marketplace listing will be removed, and all related documentation will be taken down. There will also be a 30-day reminder via email and within the app about deprecation

9/20/23: We will disable connecting the app for existing users

We recommend exploring alternative apps in our Atlassian Marketplace to find a suitable replacement.

Thank you,

The Atlassian Product Integrations Team

How about turning it into a community-supported project? There are a number of critical features that have been asked for since 2020. It seems unfair to discontinue "due to low usage and adoption" when it wasn't allowed to succeed in the first place.

  • Pipeline status notifications
  • Subscriptions to branch events (push, new PR, etc)
  • Security Insight status change notifications

To name a few. This comes from someone whose entire workflow consists of Atlassian for vscode extension, and Teams-based communication. Avoiding Jira/BB web interfaces is a great benefit.

Hello Bryan Gonzales,

Turning off the app will not affect the notifications because they are implemented using a connector hosted on the Microsoft side. However, as you might have seen, configuring the notifications for new channels is not supported since the beginning of 2023. Microsoft removed it either due to the low usage :(

And I just started using it...

Is this just the bitbucket connector or does it affect the jira connector too?

Hello Mike,

We are just deprecating the Bitbucket app, neither Bitbucket connector nor Jira connector is affected.

It isn't clear that this only relates to the app and not the connector. Perhaps it would be good to make the distinction, else it looks like Bitbucket and Teams can no longer talk given the surprise alert that's popped up on our Teams.

We use this to notify us of builds. etc. Hopefully it can help others https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1216365/advanced-microsoft-teams-bitbucket-connector?tab=overview&hosting=cloud

Teams connector stopped working around 7/4 for us and no longer appears as a channel option, so it's not just the app itself, unless I'm missing something.  Only a Bitbucket Server connector still exists.

Seems the Bitbucket Cloud Connector no longer exists..

Savan Vadalia July 31, 2023

For us Bitbucket connector stopped sending Pull request notifcation with  last notification seen in our Teams channel on 05/07/2023.

I am confused how discontinuing the "Bitbucket App" stops the "Bitbucket Connector", can you please provide some clarity? Like @Christopher Crook mentioned when searching "Bitbucket" in connector space only connector comes up is "Bitbucket Server".

Now I'm getting survey requests for the Atlassian extension for vscode. "How disappointed would you be if you could no longer use this extension?".

Seriously, WTH is going on at Atlassian? I'd get your telemetry sorted out, clearly, your usage adoption stats are off.

@Volodymyr Hensorskyi please confirm your messaging. The notification we received in Teams made no mention about the Bitbucket Cloud Connector, only the Bitbucket app for MS Teams.

Without the cloud connector, what integration remains between BB and Teams? The App for MS Teams allowed personal notifications for BB instead of the connector, which required repository admin roles and a notification sent to a channel. The 2 things are significantly different. And there are common use cases for both. One is not a replacement for the other.

Hi Bryan,

I understand that you're feeling sad and concerned about the deprecation of the app you've been using. It was hard for us to make a decision about the app deprecation but it happens for various reasons, including outdated technology, security concerns, etc.

Right, we did not mention Bitbucket Cloud Connector because it totally different application that is not hosted on our side. Microsoft is totally responsible for it and put off configuring it for new channels earlier this year.

@Volodymyr Hensorskyi

I thought "Bitbucket Cloud Connector" is a connector maintained by Atlassian and not Microsoft?

Can you please recommend alternatives for the "Bitbucket Cloud Connector"?

For security reasons I am struggling to convince our Internal Network security Team to adopt a 3rd party connector.

Hi Savan,

Unfortunately, there is no solution maintained by Atlassian for now :( However, you may select any connector from the marketplace, this one, for example.

There's not actually anything called "Bitbucket App for Microsoft Teams" in Atlassian Marketplace. There's only one called "Microsoft Teams for Bitbucket Cloud", which is by Atlassian for Bitbucket Cloud. And amusingly, that one does not have any deprecation notice.

Additionally, Atlassian has an app called Bitbucket in Microsoft Teams. It's also not called "Bitbucket app for Microsoft Teams" but apparently they use that term internally as its title. There's not a single word about deprecation on the description of the app.

Both of the above are actually this app that is being deprecated. Unfortunately, they haven't bothered to update the listing. Wish they would!

ended up making my own integration using powerautomate because of the lack of functionality in the available apps.

I might be anthropomorphizing a bit, but the dying gasps of Bitbucket, my faithful companion in Teams, are either very funny or sad. I haven't decided which: Bitbucket _ Microsoft Teams 2023-09-07 20-52-02.mp4

Either way, I'm not uninstalling, no matter how much you annoy me. I'd do the same for a terminal loved one. Who knows, if I stay logged in after shut down, maybe I'll get isekai'd.

Sam Ware October 10, 2023

How can you uninstall it?
