Are Portfolio Stages workflows and how do you indicate one stage is done and you are ready for next?

We are just trying Portfolio for Jira.  I have set up stages but don't know how they are going to work or integrate with the jira story.  How do you indicate one stage is done and you are ready for the next? How do you know what stage a story is in, etc....

That is a very good question. It would help if we could map the workflow stage to the Portfolio stage,  but that does not seem to be possible with this version.  Adding Stages and Skills just added a whole bunch of extra setup work for very little gain. 

Is anyone using Stages and Skills productively?
