Where on the page can I find the open item?

When I follow a link to an item, it is  opened on a backdrop on top on all the different lists.

Why isn't the location of the open item marked in any way on the  page?

After I close it, it is impossible to find the item on the page,

This cant be how it is  supposed to work.

I suppose you're inquiring about cards and their position in a list; am I right?

When viewing a card, you can see what list it belongs to right under the card title: 

You can also take advantage of the filtering feature on a board to find a specific card by some keywords from its title, for example. Here's more about it: https://support.atlassian.com/trello/docs/filtering-for-cards-on-a-board/
