Watching a list, yet no email notifications

I'm watching a list, but only receiving notifications on trello; the bell colour changes to red. I assume that I should receive emails too in case a card is created or updated in the list.

Is this normal, and if yes how can I get trello to send email notifications?

Do you have your email notifications set to Immediate at www.trello.com/my/account?  If so, when you see a notification in the bell, are you clicking it to clear it? If you are, Trello may not have had time to send the notification email between when the action happened and when you cleared it.
