Trello will run at different speeds depending on how many lists & cards you have on a board. If you have a few cards (up to about 100) you shouldn't notice any loss of speed, however, when you're trying to load a board with hundreds (or even thousands) of cards and lists, it will slow down.
Also, speed depends on your browser and internet connection. If you're working from home, it might be that your ISP has throttled your internet speed to take account of everyone working from home at the moment. It might also be that the browser you're using needs to be updated? Depending on the browser that you're using, specifically Chrome, depending on how many tabs you have open and how many Chrome Extensions you have enabled, this can considerably slow Chrome down.
If you could let us know the browser you're using, or if you're using a native app, let us know that too, and maybe if the board you're trying to load is massive, you might consider splitting it into some smaller boards? If this is something that you think might be beneficial, there are ways to do that, that keep all the information current that we can talk through with you.
Esme :)
Blaming the user for creating too many cards is laughable. Trello (or Atlassian, or whoever owns this badly designed piece of software) should come up with ways to help the user, instead of blaming them. The most basic thing that Trello could do (but doesn't) is to offer the option to open cards in a separate window, so the user can at least work on a single card, instead of having an overlay of the card over the entire board. That's where most of the delays come from, having an entire board loaded in memory, and then having to open a card with all sorts of useless integrations.
