Hi - I am new so sorry if this is obvious .. I want to use TRello business for create contact cards or something and then follow those leads up and my progress.. is this possible without using an external program and a power up? Thanks so much Kell

That depends! You can have a card represent almost anything you want. That can certainly be a contact card in that you can store almost any text on a Trello card that you want.
There aren't any special "contact cards" functionalities, though, so it depends on what you're thinking you want the card to do. You might want to check out our Sales Team Playbooks here, which can give you some great ideas on how to do what you're looking for: https://trello.com/teams/sales
