How do you "Store the task's dependencies as items in a checklist on the card." ?

I'm trying to create sub-tasks on a card. I want to be able to link the tasks, but all I seem to be able to do is type text. How do I actually "link" the item in the checklist so it links to an existing card on the board? Thanks

edit: Nevermind. After some further reading on troubleshooting forums it appears I'm simply the victim of malicious design, and I will not be able to do something as simple as create a sub-task unless I pay a fee.

@[deleted] can you link to cards from a checklist item on the free version. You can also automate it with Butler:
