Emailing to update a card

Laura Sutherland July 20, 2021

I am looking for a way to update cards from emails - for instance If i forward an email to my board and create a card is it possible that any further emails forwarded with the same subject line can update the existing card rather than creating a new one?

Or can this only be done by emailing the specific card email address?

@Laura Sutherland if you're using Gmail you can also do this with my products BenkoBoard and BenkoDesk:

http://www.benkoboard.com/ <-- for individuals

http://www.benkodesk.com/ <-- for teams

You can configure it so all emails are imported, but you can also configure it so only emails you drag into a given labael are imported and this will update the existing card. I find this not only a bit more robust than the built-in threading but more convenient because you can also reply directly from the card (from any device).

Hey Laura,

see https://help.trello.com/article/809-creating-cards-by-email - specifically the "Email threads and duplicated cards" section:

The first time a message is sent to the board email address, it will create a new card. If replying to the email the messages will be added to the original card as comments. This could happen when the board email address is added to a long email thread, and it is designed this way to prevent duplicated cards. Only replies to or forwards from the original email which created the card will result up in a comment being added to the card. To maintain the threaded comments in the card, be sure to forward the original email message or add the board email in the BCC field on your responses.
