Duplicate Email Subjects emailed to Trello

Jon Sturm June 6, 2022

If we have emails being automatically forwarded to a trello board and its possible they could have duplicate names, will the cards get created as a duplicate or does the rule fail?

I can't add a timestamp where the source of email is coming from but can once the card arrives in Trello but I'm not sure if it will even create the new card if a duplicate card name already exists on a board in the same or a different list.

Hi @Jon Sturm ! If you have two separate emails that have the same subject line, when forwarding these emails to your Trello board using Trello's email to board function, you'll end up with two cards on your board. So yes, it would create a duplicate in this case.

Hi @Jon Sturm  👋

Christl from SendBoard here - makers of the Email for Trello Power-Up.

Thought this was an interesting question and wanted to share how we handle duplicate cards/duplicate email subjects in case you found it useful.

With our PowerUp new emails also create new cards even if they have the same subject line. If someone replies to your email though, it would automatically attach to the correct card.

You could forward an email to an existing card by including the card reference in the subject line of the forwarded email.

And, if you use the Email for Trello PowerUp you could merge duplicate cards if you needed to. When merging cards you can choose which card to keep and which to archive and also whether or not to merge comments and attachments on the master card.

You're welcome to pop over any questions to hello@sendboard.com.

Happy emailing!
