Can free users join (or be invited to join) a board in a business class team board setting?

We want to have the ability to add some occasional users with free accounts to collaborate on certain job cards once we upgrade our primary team to business class.

Sure, you can add individual users to Business Class team boards as guests. They will be able to work on the board normally, same as any other team member on the board.

If the user is added to a single team board only - this is free of charge. If a user outside the team is added to more than one team board, the Multi Board Guest charge will apply: https://help.trello.com/article/1123-multi-board-guests
