I have a rule in place that automatically adds a checklist to a newly created card, based on a checklist I created in a template card on my board. As we are just starting out using Trello as a small company, we are still trying to figure out what items we want to add to a checklist. Is there a way to have any new item added to the template checklist automatically flow to the other checklists on cards that were previously created?
My guess is that you want to know where the checklist were previously copied into and or which of the cards are copies of the template card. For the latter the attribute sourceCard contains the id of the template card. For the former there is no such provision except for the fact that it is probably from the template card if the copy is of the entire template card.
Unfortunately, that attribute is not available as a card variable. I created an extension to create a checklist of links of all the child cards for a template card to allow the child cards to receive updates from the template cards. That way you can iterate through it to add the new item to the copied cards.

**Minor correction** : sourceCard is associated with the copyCard action
