Ten Thousand Power-Ups and Counting

Today the Trello Ecosystem Team is thrilled to celebrate an exciting milestone…

10,000 Power-Ups!

You’re probably asking yourself, “Whoa, I thought we just recently celebrated 100 Power-Ups?!” You’re right, back in September 2018, we celebrated our 100th public Power-Up. But, behind every great public Power-Ups is a private Power-Up!

What is a private Power-Up? A private Power-Up is a custom-built Power-Up that is only available to a single Trello team. Generally, these Power-Ups provide functionality similar to public ones, but it may be very specifically tuned to the way the owning team works. And although we have a ton of great public Power-Ups, a lot of teams rely on custom Power-Ups to dial in their Trello experience. For instance:

  • 🗞Telegraph manages their newsdesks' publishing process via a custom Power-Up (and they are so proud of it they took the time to blog about it!)

  • 🌮Trello’s web team uses a custom Power-Up for generating changelogs when a new version of the web client is released.

  • 📹We live-coded a Weather Power-Up on Youtube that you can build yourself and add to one of your own boards!

This is all to say, we think public Power-Ups are great! But we think a team who has built their own, awesome, delightful, custom Power-Up that helps them get shit done is just as exciting.

Why should you build a custom Power-Up?

Custom Power-Ups can be as simple or as complex as you want–you’re in complete control. The Ecosystem team has spent a lot of time ensuring that the Power-Ups platform on which custom Power-Ups are built is powerful enough to make all of your dreams come true!

Imagine this scenario: you and your team love to rate cards together to prioritize what should be worked on next. You’ve been using the Stars Power-Up, but your team is big on rating with 🌮s instead of ⭐️s. And you actually rate two different things:

  • 🌮for custom impact

  • 🌯for implementation feasibility

No worries! The makers of the Stars Power-Up were kind enough to open source their Power-Up. With a few tweaks, you can build the ultimate 🌮/ 🌯Power-Up to take your teams prioritization meets to the next level.

Where do I go to learn more about building Power-Ups?

We highly recommend following along with this tutorial on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLCkcQnwAQk

The final code for the tutorial is available here: https://github.com/trello/weather-power-up.

There are a number of example Power-Ups on our Glitch page at https://glitch.com/@trello. We’re really proud of the trello-power-up on Glitch; it is jam-packed with demos of all of the Power-Up capabilities and tons of documentation in the comments.

Not sure what to build? Our team loves to come up with ideas and add them to the Power-Up Ideas board.

If you get stuck, we’re here to help! Never hesitate to ask a question over in the Trello developers' forum here: https://community.developer.atlassian.com/c/trello
