ShipIt Day delivers!

Atlassian is more than the products we use. Not only do their tools help enhance how our teams' work, Atlassian shares ideas to support teamwork (check out the Team Playbook).

One popular invention by Atlassian are ShipIt Days, formally FedEx Day. The name change story is captured in this blog post and go here for the Atlassian ShipIt Day FAQShipIt Live was also was a feature at Summit 2019.

What does ShipIt Day deliver?

As the former and current name suggests, the goal of ShipIt Day is for teams to work in a predefined time period typically 1-1.5 days and deliver a minimum viable product. An example of this is TechTime's ShipIt Day in May 2018 which lead directly to the release of our latest Marketplace app EasyTime – Automatic time tracking.

But that is just the icing on the cake!

The reason I organise ShipIt Days are captured in the comments I get from team members afterward. Today's comments included:

  • the high of delivering/finishing something from someone whose day-to-day role is focused on maintenance, repeating support queries, and ongoing work rather than projects.
  • the satisfaction of having the wider team appreciate the magic that can be delivered through the application of technical skills.
  • acknowledgment that ShipIt Day was worthwhile even though at the start of the event it seemed like a distraction from a busy inbox and weekly sprint.

ShipIt Day delivers and not just MVPs!
