Summit Europe 2017: A Product Manager's Place in a DevOps World

Dave Meyer Atlassian Team May 26, 2017

At Summit Europe 2017, I shared product managers can lean into the transition that teams around the world are making from building products to running services.

Check out the presentation and slides.

PMs need to evolve into a new world where service uptime, reliability, and performance matter just as much as features and bugs.

Consider these questions:

  • How does performance affect your customers' your product's NPS score?
  • Are you incorporating reliability metrics into your product roadmap?
  • What's your role when during an incident that's taken your service down?

Becoming a service-oriented PM means collaborating effectively with teams like SRE, understanding monitoring and alerting, and leveraging tools like feature flags to safely roll out changes. In my talk, I spoke about how product managers on the JIRA team contribute to incident management and review, support a green build culture, plan for reliability, and roll out features and experiments in a services-first world.
