Does Stride support persisting/exporting 1:1 chat history for deactivated users?

Jessica Hartog September 7, 2017

Hey Atlassian,

Hipchat has had an ongoing flaw for quite some time that has not been addressed. Namely, when a user is deactivated (sometimes unexpectedly), it is incredibly onerous, to the point of being nearly impossible for an active user to export the 1:1 chat history that they had with the deactivated account.

The only proposed solution in HipChat right now requires the help of an admin and having to jump through hacky API hoops and has been expressly not recommended.

I'm excited to hear about the announcement of Stride, and am hoping you could clarify some things related to this issue:

  • Do 1:1 conversations with deactivated accounts in Stride persist after one of the accounts is deactivated?
    • For reference, in HipChat right now, when an account is deactivated, the tab that contained that 1:1 chat on the HipChat client disappears for active users.
    • It would be ideal if these conversations persisted, with an optional setting that if both users became deactivated for some amount of time the 1:1 chats can, presumably be safely removed.
  • Can chats be exported to a simple text file for searching purposes?
    • In particular, is this export self-service? Can I, as an active user, export chat history with an deactivated user without having to do anything other than click a few buttons in a UI?
    • If export is supported, is it supported for a specific time range as well as (more importantly) for the entire 1:1 chat history?

Thanks!

Hi Jessica,

First of all, thanks for the well-thought out questions. You clearly know a lot about Hipchat.

Hopefully I can clarify some things for you!

  1. So the short answer is yes, you can retrieve the chats you had with a former colleague in the client itself (similar to an archived room) and all of these chats will be included in any data export you do.
  2. However, Stride does not yet offer data exports. A self-service export mechanism for your entire history is something we have in our roadmap. Data exports for a specific time period aren't something we've looked into yet, but that's great feedback!

Let us know if you have any other questions!
