I found that I have lost some functionality. If I could just look at an old file, it would be so much easier to solve because it will be a heck of a job to build it again.

I haven't seen any change to this functionality in the new version. If you are looking at a repo in history view and you click on a previous commit, you can right click one of the files listed for that commit and choose "Open Selected Version". Sourcetree will make a copy of that version of the file in temp space and open it in your default editor for that extension.
