Sourcetree 2.3.1.0 - fail to authenticate to an enterprise installation that uses Windows Creds

Robert Larson September 20, 2017

Have a corporate enterprise GitHub installation. Switching from GitHub desktop to Sourcetree. Getting

remote: invalid username or password

fatal: Authentication failed for https://github.customer.net/....repository.git/

I cannot push or pull. At work stoppage and need help to fix this.

I have cleared all credentials in the Windows Credential manager related to sourcetree and GitHub.

What do I need to do now to get prompted for credentials so it can store the windows credentials.

Fixed it

  1. Open Sourcetree
  2. Go to Tools->Options
  3. Click the GIT button
  4. At the bottom where is says GIT version, click the [Update embedded git] button and upgrade
  5. Click Ok
  6. Close Sourcetree
  7. Reopen sourcetree and attempt a pull on a repro
  8. You will be prompted for credentials, enter your userid and password and it will cache them and should work.
