Checkboxes were removed in, I think, version 1.9.

If you are trying to select multiple files, you can control/shift click. Then you can Stage Selected, or right click for other operations on the selected files (Add, Remove, Discard, Ignore, etc).

Here's a bug report asking for the checkboxes to be restored. You can watch it if you like: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/SRCTREEWIN-5947

For comparison sake, here's an old bug complaining about the behavior when they added the checkbox: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/SRCTREEWIN-2456
