Edit long commit message

Hi, I'm using SourceTree on Mac and I love it!

I usually have quite long commit messages to write, but the commit message text field seems to be limited to have 6 lines visible i.e. I need to scoll a lot ;) Would it be possible to add a vertical splitter to resize it or to open an external editor?

Would also be cool to have some optional functionality to hard wrap or reflow text passages that are longer than the 72 characters width indicator.

These are just "nice to have" considerations ;)

Yes, auto-formatting the message for many would be nice, especially if you're committing for patches that are being submitted to more stringent repositories like Git or Linux.

My use case: On Gerrit I'm constrained to use hard wrap, because otherwise the web page doesn't look great. It's like in this ticket I found via Google https://code.google.com/p/gerrit/issues/detail?id=1741

Thanks for the quick reply! Tickets look promissing.

If the resizing of the text area would be flexible and remembered after app relaunch, that would be great.

The column guide is already very useful, but I was thinking of something like this feature in TextMate http://projects.serenity.de/textmate/tutorials/basics/#formatting Once you insert new text in the middle of a paragraph you're still doing the whole reformatting by hand otherwise ;)

There's already an open issue scheduled for the next version of SourceTree to resize the text field against the diff view here: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/SRCTREE-1452

There's also an open issue to show the character count when showing the column marker which should aid in showing you how many characters are per line here: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/SRCTREE-1650
