It puzzles me why a code repository program autocorrects the text in the commit message.  The other day it corrected "zurb" to "curb."  Is there anyway to turn this off?

I'm guessing you're on Mac? My understanding is that SourceTree uses native form controls, so textareas come with the OSX autocorrect.

Thanks a lot Seth!  Yes, I am on Mac and I just disabled that option.  I apologize; I thought that it was a SourceTree issue but this makes perfect sense.
