suppressing emoticon display in text fields

Our description fields require some text which may contain "emoticon like sequences"; we do not want automatic display of those emoticon symbols/icons ; We want to suppress display of emoticon symbols How do we control that.

Is there a configuration parameter that controls this rendering of text fields? Where can I find this info?

Your option is to use the Default text renderer instead of the Wiki style renderer.
