Why isn't custom user picker field retaining user name?

I created a new user picker field and when i create a ticket, I can select a user just as I should be able to. Once the tickets been created, it appears that this field is now blank and I need to go back and edit the ticket, re-enter the user and the name is retained in the field. Why isn't it retaiing the user during the creation stage?

The issue was that the field was defaulting to a custom field and the post function needed to be moved below the indexing step.
