Why in Tortoise Mercurial does commit succeed even though authentication fails

I have been confused for hours because I attempted to commit to my local PC repository and received a message that authentication failed (I apparently mistyped the password).  I then tried a new commit but that failed because it showed no changed files.  I performed a rollback to try to get back to my prior state with the changed files flagged in my repository, but they are no longer there in the earlier version.  It's going to take a couple of hours to straighten this out now.  What am I supposed to do when authentication supposedly fails?
