What's the impact if you set up re-indexing plugin and run it on the fly?

For our jira instance, we have more than 310,000 issues. And every time it took us more than one hour to fully re-indexing from Administrator page. Unfortunately, our jira application had to out of service for same time. That's painful for our users.

We are about to set up re-indexing plugin which can use IssueIndexManager.reIndexAll(). Good thing is we can do it silently, without any maintenance window. But I am not sure what's the potential impact if we did this way.

Please kindly advise!

I'd be interested in knowing why you have to force a re-index every night, what version of Jira are you using?
