What does "atlassian.standalone=JIRA" in setenv.sh mean?

Does anyone know what "-Datlassian.standalone=JIRA" option in setenv.sh means?

Is this option not required for JIRA Data Center edition?

Thanks,

G2G Japan.

See https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/JIRA044/Installing+JIRA+Standalone for more details.
